The Ethiopian Midwives Association (EMwA), in partnership with the Amhara Regional Health Bureau (ARHB) and EngenderHealth, conducted a face-to-face Post-Partum Family Planning (PPFP) training from June 29 to July 4, 2026, at the Bahir Dar University CMHS CPD Center in Bahir Dar, Amhara region.
Post-partum family planning is a critical intervention in maternal and child healthcare. Research shows that spacing pregnancies by more than two years can avert over 42% of maternal deaths and reduce child mortality.
To help address the unmet need for contraception among postpartum women, this initiative focused on updating the clinical knowledge, counseling techniques, and practical skills of 20 healthcare service providers from various health institutions.
Using the updated 2024 Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) training guidelines, the program combined theoretical sessions, model simulation practice, and a 3-day clinical attachment across five health facilities in Bahir Dar (Felege Hiwot Hospital, Addis Alem Primary Hospital, Bahir Dar Health Center, Abay Health Center, and Han Health Center). During the practical clinical attachment, trainees provided PPFP services—including Post-Partum Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (PPIUCD) and implant insertions and removals—to 76 clients, with all participants achieving competency scores above 85% in skill evaluations.
EMwA remains committed to working alongside regional health bureaus and international partners to build healthcare provider capacity and improve reproductive health outcomes across Ethiopia.
