What We Do
1. Strengthening Midwifery Practice
EMwA supports the continuous professional development of midwives and promotes evidence-based, competency-driven practice. The Association works with health facilities, training institutions, government partners, and other stakeholders to strengthen the knowledge, skills, leadership, and professional capacity of midwives.
2. Improving Maternal and Newborn Health
EMwA implements and supports initiatives that contribute to improved antenatal, childbirth, postpartum, and newborn care. The Association promotes respectful maternity care, continuity of care, quality improvement, and models of care that place women and newborns at the center of health services.
3. Advancing the Midwifery Model of Care
EMwA is supporting the development of the Midwifery Model of Care (MMoC) Protocol and Implementation Guide to promote continuity of care, teamwork, appropriate deployment of midwives, and woman-centered care.
In addition, EMwA is piloting the Midwifery Model of Care in three health facilities across Amhara and Sidama Regions and in Addis Ababa City Administration. Through baseline assessments, MMoC orientation, mentorship, and implementation support, EMwA is generating evidence and practical lessons to strengthen the MMoC and inform its future scale-up across Ethiopia.
4. Supporting Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights
EMwA contributes to improved access to quality sexual and reproductive health services, including:
- Antenatal and postnatal care
- Family planning and postpartum family planning
- Comprehensive abortion care
- Prevention and management of sexually transmitted infections
- Cervical cancer screening
- Adolescent and youth-friendly services
- Maternal and newborn health services
5. Reaching the Unreached Through Mobile Health and Nutrition Teams (MHNT)
EMwA is committed to bringing essential maternal, newborn, and reproductive health services closer to communities that face barriers to accessing routine health services.
With financial and technical support from UNFPA, EMwA is implementing Mobile Health and Nutrition Team (MHNT) services in Sherkole Woreda in Assosa Zone, and Dangur Woreda in the Metekel Zone of Benishangul-Gumuz Region.
Through the MHNT approach, EMwA takes essential health and nutrition services directly to underserved and hard-to-reach communities, helping reduce geographical, financial, and other barriers to care, particularly for women, newborns, children, adolescents, and communities affected by humanitarian challenges.
The initiative focuses on strengthening access to essential services while connecting communities with the broader health system through appropriate referral and follow-up mechanisms.
6. Supporting Women and Girls Affected by Gender-Based Violence
EMwA implements interventions that support survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) to rebuild their lives, strengthen their economic resilience, and improve access to essential support services.
As part of these efforts, EMwA has:
- Provided basic entrepreneurship and business skills training to SGBV survivors to strengthen their knowledge and capacity to establish or manage businesses.
- Provided ETB 70,000 in seed funding to support 100 SGBV survivors to start or strengthen income-generating activities.
- Supported 100 SGBV survivors in Afar and Amhara Regions to engage in livelihood and income-generating activities.
- Conducted awareness-raising sessions in schools to promote knowledge on SGBV prevention, protection, and response.
- Organized community conversation sessions to strengthen community awareness, prevention, early response, and support for survivors.
Through these interventions, EMwA promotes a survivor-centered and empowerment-focused approach, recognizing that effective SGBV response requires not only access to essential services but also strengthened economic opportunities, community support, prevention, and meaningful participation of survivors in rebuilding their lives.
7. Strengthening Health Workforce Capacity
EMwA provides and facilitates blended learning, mentorship, on-the-job training (OJT), and continuous professional development (CPD) for midwives and other health professionals to strengthen competencies and improve the quality of care at facility and community levels.
These capacity-strengthening interventions are implemented in collaboration with key partners through different programs and projects, including:
- JSI – Strengthening Service Delivery (SSD) Project
- UNFPA – Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Project
- Jhpiego – RISE Project
- PSI – MNCH Smart Pathway Project
- EngenderHealth – Integrated RMNCH-N + PPFP Scale-Up Project
Through these partnerships, EMwA supports health professionals with practical skills, mentorship, supportive supervision, continuous learning, and evidence-based approaches, contributing to a stronger health workforce and improved maternal, newborn, child, adolescent, and reproductive health services.

EMwA CPD Center call for collaboration on Training and Workshop Facilitation
The Ethiopian Midwives Association (EMwA) is a professional association envisioned to empowered midwives, quality care for every family in everywhere through continuing professional development (CPD) that ensure high-quality, RMNCAYH-N+ services in a safe and respectful manner.
In line with the direction of Ministry of Health (MoH) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a program that standardizes the fragmented and heterogeneous professional development activities in the country obliging health professionals to get updates in their respected areas of practice by taking accredited courses from licensed CPD centers. Accordingly EMwA has been working as one of the CPD accreditors and a certified CPD provider. So far the Association had accredited 75 CPD providers throughout the country & engaged in CPD course development activities for a number of Face to Face, online and blended courses.
Our center is established to primarily meet the growing demand of health professionals and organizations for CPD. In doing so the center is equipped with high-tech facilities able to satisfy training and workshops requirements with optional offerings including well-furnished highly cost effective and cost efficient venue having a strong internet connection, Smart TV, website access, simulation equipment, models and materials along with a pool of qualified trainers with diverse and rich technical background and excellent instructional expertise for a range of training opportunities across RMNCAYHN+. EMwA and Laerdal Global Health Strengthen Midwives’ Skills in Managing Postpartum Haemorrhage
18 midwives equipped with practical skills to recognize and respond to postpartum haemorrhage through simulation-based training.
The Ethiopian Midwives Association (EMwA), in collaboration with Laerdal Global Health, conducted a BAB (Bleeding After Birth) training on May 13–14, 2026, at the EMwA CPD Center in Addis Ababa.
The training aimed to strengthen the knowledge and practical skills of health professionals who attend births or respond to obstetric emergencies, enabling them to promptly recognize, assess, and manage postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), one of the leading causes of maternal mortality.
The two-day training applied a Low-Dose, High-Frequency (LDHF) approach, combining simulation scenarios, skills practice, demonstrations, blood-loss estimation, and competency-based skills check-outs. Practice facilitators supported participants to strengthen clinical skills, teamwork, communication, and emergency response through repeated hands-on learning.
A total of 18 midwives, including 8 women, from Addis Ababa, Amhara, Central Ethiopia, Dire Dawa, Gambella, Oromia, and Sidama participated in the training. Participants demonstrated strong engagement and active participation throughout the sessions.
Upon successful completion, participants received certificates carrying 12 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
The training reinforces EMwA’s commitment to strengthening midwives’ competencies and improving timely, high-quality care for women experiencing postpartum haemorrhage.

EMwA Strengthens Family Planning Skills Through Accredited CFP Training: Building a more skilled and confident health workforce for quality, comprehensive family planning services.
The Ethiopian Midwives Association (EMwA) CPD Center successfully facilitated two rounds of Comprehensive Family Planning (CFP) training for DKT Ethiopia from June 10–28, 2018, at the EMwA CPD Center in Addis Ababa.
The accredited 11-day competency-based training equipped 36 health professionals, including nurses, general practitioners, midwives, and health officers from DKT-supported private health facilities in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, and Oromia, with updated knowledge and practical skills in comprehensive family planning methods.
The training combined six days of interactive classroom learning with five days of supervised clinical practice. Participants practiced the insertion and removal of Implanon, Jadelle, and IUCDs using anatomical models before undertaking hands-on practice at high-volume clinical sites under the guidance of experienced trainers and mentors.
Participants were assessed through pre- and post-tests, skills check-outs, and daily and end-of-course evaluations. Upon successful completion, all trainees received certificates carrying 15 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The training reflects EMwA’s continued commitment to strengthening health workers’ competencies and supporting the delivery of high-quality, client-centered family planning servicesin Ethiopia.

EMwA CPD Center Conducts 12-Day BEmONC Training in Collaboration with Eka Kotebe General Hospital
Addis Ababa, May 2, 2026 — The Ethiopian Midwives Association (EMwA) CPD Center, in collaboration with Eka Kotebe General Hospital, successfully completed a 12-day Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) training held from April 20 to May 2, 2026.
The training, financed by Eka Kotebe General Hospital, aimed to strengthen the knowledge and clinical competencies of midwives in providing quality emergency obstetric and newborn care and contributing to improved maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
The first six days combined interactive classroom learning with competency-based simulation practice at the EMwA CPD Center. Participants then completed clinical skills checkouts before undertaking six days of supervised clinical attachment at high-case-load facilities, supported by experienced midwife mentors.
A total of 20 midwives successfully completed the training and received certificates carrying 15 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
At the closing ceremony, Dr Fikadu Adugna (Quality and innovation corporate director), Woynabeba Damene (CPD, Practicum and Research Director), and Dr Tsegaye Gizaw(MCH Team Leader) from Eka Kotebe General Hospital and EMwA highlighted the importance of continuous professional development and strengthening midwives’ clinical competencies to improve the quality of care for mothers and newborns.
As part of the collaboration, EMwA also donated essential equipment to Eka Kotebe General Hospital, including neonatal suction equipment, blood pressure apparatus, thermometers, measuring tapes, and other essential supplies to support maternal and newborn care services.
